Approximations of History

Approximations of History considers the hypothesised history of the Los Angeles River between 1815 and 1938. While the precise geography is unknown, historians estimate the Los Angeles River changed course at least nine times in the first half of the nineteenth century alone. Each work represents one of these significant shifts as detailed in Blake Gumprecht's The Los Angeles River: Its Life, Death, and Possible Rebirth. The series extracts a line drawing into three-dimensional  forms, creating fictional fossils of a history we assume to be true, upon which the entire infrastructure of our city is built.
