Compass Rose Maps

Compass Rose Maps

Maps in Compass Rose were redrawn from the Sanborn Fire Insurance Atlases, a cartographic index in use from c1868 to 1970 that charted in detail the urbanization of America. With multiple indexes simultaneously on loan, it is possible to locate indexes of the same geographic updated decades apart, providing a layered look at the evolution of cities. By working with multiple indexes and basing each map on a local oral history, this series of maps folds the past, present and future of the community into one physical plane. Each oral history is archived in (NE)LA Stories, the oral history archive founded in collaboration with Oxy Arts and Occidental College as part of Compass Rose. The above public installation in Highland Park, the artist’s home community as depicted in the redrawn maps,  is supported by Arroyo Arts Collective.
